Why oh why is this even NECESSARY? How can our 'GOVERNMENT' not already know this and be doing what needs to be done?! The year is 2009, not 1989. 'Free markets' are dead. Intervene to save our planet's ecosystems, our prosperity, and essentially, humanity's long-term survival.

40% by 2020 should be an un-negotiable target. Citizens of New Zealand look to our Goverment for leadership on this issue. Don't tell us that it's too hard. It's never too hard, it's just about being prepared to commit to action in times of crisis. Now is one of those times.

I visited NZ for 7 weeks and was struck by the environmental destruction of its forests and wildlife. I pray that NZ not only hits a 40 percent reduction in carbon emissions but starts growing back its forests (and get rid of the California pines)
