Climate change media events

Does anyone have an idea of how we could push for tv and newspaper coverage of well-informed communication on climate change. I know 350.org is encouraging a mass day of action in October (24th?) to highlight Kiwi support for the Copenhagen conference. Perhaps we could generate public interest before this event. Maybe a televised debate or discussion (channel 1, 3 or prime news) between Jim Salinger and one of our MPs. The recent article by Catherine Beard, and some Letters to the Editor responses to Robyn Malcolm’s reply article are great examples of how people still consider the subject to be un-scientific or the risks to be insignificant. Perhaps we could request the help from some of the recent celebrity support to pull some strings in the media rooms.

Are there other plans in the works from Greenpeace, NZ or overseas? Anyone else?

I realise those celebs are the ones that gather the attention to those who count - but how can we get involved in those things in the pipeline Keith? i'm studying a bachelor in communications at AUT and well versed in the tv/radio industries.

Public Consultation

pic

G'day guys,

So the Govt. have released the dates of their public consultation meetings to determine what sort of target NZ wants to commit to at Copenhagen...
We all know what we want, we just need to tell our MPs that!

The dates for the meetings can be found here, so if we all find our local meeting venue and date, then get all our friends/family to rock along and demand a 40% by 2020 target, we should be sorted!

Anyone have any ideas of how we can spread awareness of this beyond SIgnOn.org.nz? I haven't seen it in the news or anything yet...

I can't suggest nothing more than what the Green Party haven't already done with their political campaigns: Setting up stands at local events, video/online YouTube, setting up a Bebo page, chuck a link/web banner of SignOn.org.nz on the Greens.org.nz website, local news rags are always looking for content, glue + posters, hitting up some local radio stations and see if they'd like to interview etc.etc.

We have a long way to go before the Copenhagen event, so spreading the word early (which is what I am doing) is important and the fact that the Government has recognised the need to listen up/get public consultation already on the target by 2020 is an achievement but ultimately I want John Key to SignOn.
