If you’ve Signed On you’re in good company! Here’s some of the notable New Zealanders who have Signed On too.
Climate change is not something that needs to be thought over. It is not an issue that needs discussion. It is not a topic that is up for debate. It is undeniable that our climate needs instant attention and we Kiwis need to stand up for our reputation, for our kids and for our planet.
I was disgusted and ashamed when I discovered how detrimental our country's role is in the climate crisis. This needs to change. No North Pole in five years? Can you hear that? This is crazy. What are we going to tell our kids? "Sorry honey, no Santa this year, he's a bit upset we destroyed his home." Not to mention "sorry about the Earth we are leaving you kids, it used to be able to sustain life...."
I live in America. It used to be that 100% of the time I was proud and honoured to be a Kiwi when people mentioned our clean green reputation. If we don’t take action, people won’t be talking about our beautiful environment because there won’t be one to be proud of.
The nature of my industry means I have to stay flexible. I stay in Auckland and London. In Auckland I walk everywhere in and London I cycle. Even to the pub!
So I get pissed off when I see or read about politicians who ride around in their bling vehicles while us ordinary punters are making such an effort!
Please don't ignore climate change Kiwis! Get on a bus, get out of your cars. Double up to get to work.
But more importantly, while we can all do our bit, we need the government to do it's bit - and Sign On for a 40% by 2020 emissions reduction target.
I decided to Sign On because I want to help make a difference for New Zealand and the World.
I feel very strongly that we all need to make a stand and demand that John Key only accepts 40% by 2020.
If we do not demand this then in the future there are going to be catastrophic storms with widespread major damage, there will be massive floods, huge and unstoppable bush fires.
If we don’t act and make a change for the better, and all you have to do is start with yourself, then we won’t have a world as we know it today.
If like many of my friends and family who think that climate change is just a have think to yourself would you want your children to ask you “why mum/dad did you not try to save the planet when you had a chance too, why”.
I don’t want my children and grand children to ask me why I did not do anything when I had the chance.
I want them to say thanks Dad or Granddad for saving our planet.
I'm a statue in Wellington now but I served as Premier of New Zealand at the end of the 19th century, and was the founder of the Liberal Party (the country's first organized political party).
Along with a a number of other well cast Wellingtonians I have Signed On and would like to say to Prime Minister John Key ... C'mon John - Sign On!
(We start a 'statues for strong action on climate change' Facebook group if we can get enough support from our fellow statues around the country.)
Tackling climate change is one of the biggest challenge facing our generation, it’s time we started acting like it. Inaction in desperate times is going to lead to horrible outcomes and unless we encourage the government to sign on to the 40% target at Copenhagen we are going to end up in dire circumstances
I hope AUSA backing the Sign On campaign will kick start renewed focus on the issue at tertiary institutes where he hopes further actions will be taken to ensure our government takes the necessary steps to do our bit as part of a global deal at Copenhagen.
The Government's recent attempt at a target just doesn’t cut the mustard. I’d like to see strong action to a strong threat facing this country. It’s sad to see the government isn’t dealing with this issue realistically.
I am a photographer and conservationist.
I grieve for the animals that will die and the species that will go extinct because of our selfish , destructive global warming habits . Beautiful landscapes full of beautiful plants, insects and animals are at threat and some are already disappearing.... All because of our greed and stupidity .
We are deeply saddened when we see an individual animal suffering and yet we have not yet woken up to the massacre of animals we are causing through global warming. We have set fire to our paradise .... our Eden is burning .. we must stop global warming.
We are at a turning point in the history of our planet. Ice caps are melting, oceans are becoming more acidic, sea levels are rising and coral reefs are dying. Our climate is changing faster than predicted by scientists the world over.
Never before has so much depended on us as individuals, as communities and as nations. Our choice is stark - continuation or obliteration. We must cut carbon emissions or face growing and unstoppable climate chaos. The consequences of not making a brave stand are dire.
If New Zealand does not make a real commitment to stopping climate change it will lose its internationally known clean green brand. It will send the wrong signal to countries like India and China, who will be reluctant to reduce their carbon emissions if supposedly clean countries like ours are not willing to take the same step. Most importantly it will be a willing contributor to the greatest environmental crisis of our time.
