Voices from the Pacific
Voices from the Pacific
Hi there everyone!
Just a quick note about the Sign On campaign. Initially, I wanted to be a part of the campaign because I believe in what it stands for. I am always very wary of what I agree to do, too much and it takes away from the truth of the message or cause.
Ever since becoming a mother, I have had to truly re-assess my part in the World, what I do to contribute to its deterioration, taking responsibility and how I can change that. I can only take small steps, educate Felicity in the truth of what is going on and hopefully embed morals in her that urge her to continue with the positive change we have started making.
At the end of the week, I am off to the Cook Islands to join the Greenpeace ship, the Esperanza. We will be meeting with the Cook Islands' PM, Pacific NGO's, locals and documenting the effects of climate change in the Pacific.
I am looking forward to the trip, it's a wee bit scary as I'm not a HUGE fan of the water but I do have a passion for giving our Pacific neighbours a voice. What really sucked me into wanting to know more about climate change in the Pacific was the moral unjustness of it. The small and poor countries of the World contribute the least to climate change, yet they are the first to suffer. It doesn't make sense to me and it's not fair!
I have started a Facebook group, Keisha Castle Hughes - Greenpeace Ambassador. On the page I'll be keeping everyone up to date with photos and writings of my travels on the Esperanza. I'll also be keeping a blog on the Sign On website.
So great to be a part of this!!
Love and light, Keisha. x

thanks keisha for doing this. Its a big effort to leave your daughter and family for this but appreciate that you are and that you will be able to tell the story back here about what is happening to our neighbours already because of climate change. thank you.
Hello Keisha,
I would like to applaud you on your decision to go on the Pacific Tour aboard the Esperanza in your capacity as a Sign On ambassador. It is exactly this kind of publicity that the campaign needs and you are leading by example. I hope the tour goes well for you. I wish you the best of luck on what will be an amazing experience.
You go girl! You've done us kiwi's proud. Good luck, look forward to hearing all about it.

I felt just the same when I became a mother at 19. It was a wake up call, the world became a whole new place and I felt responsible for the first time in the part I played in the big picture. What your doing is awesome. Good luck and YOU GO GIRL!!!
What a woman! Thank you Keisha, for standing and being counted on something so important. You are well respected and admired, a really positive role model, hopefully that will encourage people to listen and understand how serious this Climate Change problem is. We really appreciate your help and look forward to reading your blogs. Go girl!
Keisha,
It's so wonderful that you're doing this. At the climate change negotiations in Bonn it was clear that the Pacific needs all the support it can get - few countries are yet willing to take the steps needed to safeguard the Pacific (and other areas that are most vulnerable to climate change). It is their survival and future that's at stake with climate change and and so its vitally important that the stories from the Pacific are told. Thanks heaps.
Geoff
Hi there
wishing you great and wonderful adventure thank you for doing it for all of us who cannot be there

Good on ya girl! I hope you have great sea legs...if you can handle the Crook Straight you can handle anything!
Well done for taking on this venture, awesome that you will be finding the facts so you can speak from a place of experience through what you've seen.
Wishing you love and light in your journey into knowledge.

Will be seeing you on facebook.
Thank goodness for people like you and the Esperanza crew! I'm so excited for you and I look forward to reading your blogs. I believe that all those on board will be accompanied by loving, caring hearts and thoughts from the thousands of supporters who wish they could be with you in body. Take the honour of your people with you!
Thinking of you and the whole crew Keisha. You are making such a valuable contribution in doing this trip. I hope the seas are as smooth as glass for you!
Hi Keisha,
Good on you. I hope the trip goes really well and I think you are awesome for taking the time out of your busy life to help spread such an important message. I don't have kids of my own but I have 3 very precious nephews I love to bits and I want us to leave them a world in tact not in tatters.
Hope the sea fairing goes well, I'm sure there is not normally so much splashing from the ship as there seems to be in that picture!
Will check back for more from you and look forward to your updates.
Kia Ora Keisha, its awesome that you have signed on and truly believe in the hui that is coming up in Coppenhagen, I have been a supporter of Greenpeace for many years and alhough only financially I do believe that any support towards Greenpeace is a step in the right direction for all New Zealanders, and only this year have I actually become a little more involved and hope to do more. Good luck Keisha!!!!!
Hey you're awesome, I'm soooo impressed!!! Motherhood really does amazing things to us.
I wish you all the best.
Shivonne.
Dear Keisha
Just to say that I support you 100 percent - all the way there and back home on this venture. Your letter reached me through the Green Party and really struck a chord. I know what it is like to not be a huge fan of water (but I'm sure it will soon seem like 'home' on the Esperanza), and I too have a passion for giving our Pacific neighbours a voice. I love the Pacific, was in Rarotonga last year - it is sooo lovely.
Hi Keisha,
You go girl! It's one of those moments in history where people need to stand up and be counted on issues that are SOOOOO important to not just our own futures, but the future for our children and grandchildren.
And people in developing countries need our leadership more than ever, so their voices are not lost and their futures destroyed.
All power to you!
Rachel Barwell
Kia ora Keisha,
It is great that you have got on board the greenpeace wagon or boat i should say as we as maori or the tangata whenua of this land have to step up and help and support our pakeha and other ethnic brothers and sisters on these many issues our world is facing.
It is always a nice touch when you more famous kiwi's are out there supporting the cause and are trying to make a difference like the rest of us.
I have been a greenpeace supporter for a number of years now making a financial contribution every month but I know my donation is money well spent as I want my whanau, tamariki and moko to live in a beautiful safe world one day.
Once again good on you and the other celebrities for joining the sign-on and doing your bit for the cause and enjoy the sail to the Cook Islands,Raro is cool just like paradise.
Ka kite Keisha
Jason
Hi Keisha,
New Zealand needs people like you! You can move mountains. I think it's fantastic that celebrities are standing up now for what's right. I hope there are more to follow. It's going to happen - in NZ!!
Love
Gabriele
Is it your understanding that some Pacific Islands are already being evacuated due to a rising sea level?
Such as the Carteret Islands of Papua New Guinea?
If this is your or Greenpeace's position, what is the evidence that the sea level is rising?
I notice no evidence of this on beaches in Southland, New Zealand.
Exactly how are the Pacific islands being affected by climate change?
Is it the intensity and frequency of storms rather than sea level rise?
I look forward to hearing of your experiences.
Regards
Stephen Keach
Hi Keisha
I just wanted to say that you are an inspiration and that its great that many NZ celebrities are getting behind this cause. It just makes me really angry that the leaders of our country seem to value economic development over the environment. Is it so difficult to understand that you can still have economic development without compromising our environment? What will it take for our leaders to understand that we are an integral part of the environment, and that in order to have a healthy economy and population, you need to have a healthy environment! Anyway, I wish you all the very best in your travels.
Take care,
Ceilla
Hi Keisha
Its awesome that you and other kiwi celebrities are getting behind this cause. I just wish the NZ govt realised just how important this issue is not just for us but for our future generations. I despair about the environmental legacy that we are leaving for our kids and their kids. Does the NZ govt not realise that this is an urgent matter that needs to be addressed today, not tomorrow or next year, but today!
Anyway I just want to wish you well and I hope that this makes a difference!
Take care
Ceilla
I definately agree. It is the smaller countries that get hurt first through global warming, and it would be so great to be on the ship and experience what they are doing to try and combat this global problem. You go girl.
Keisha you are an inspiration! What a fab thing to be doing for a wonderful cause. Hopefully the message will spread far and wide. Supporting you and all involved from afar in London..... Kathy will help you find your sea legs, she is a seasoned fisherman!
Keisha I admire your comitment and the fact tat you are so aware of the climate change and are prepared to do something so positive enjoy the experience and thank you

Go well, Keisha;
Pacific peoples – and others throughout the developing world - will pay the highest price for Western greed and indifference.
Governments have ignored their voice; let's hope that this time, they'll listen to yours.
Dave
i have to admit i admire those who get out on those boats - esp without sea legs - it's awesome and admirable that you and the others at Greenpeace and are so committed - I only hope the rest of us come through for you. as a start, i will be keeping track of your blog and wishing you well - i look forward to learning through your eyes and words.
cheers Keisha, Kathy & the rest of the crew.

Tena koe Keisha I think it is a really positive thing you are doing for our little blue world and to share with us your experiences on the great and vast Pacific ocean and to remember what it was like when the mighty Kupe aboard Te Waka-o-Maui crossed the vast pacific ocean to Aotearoa, you can stand in the foots steps of those great voyagers and the oceans so full and teeming with wild life.
Your voice will be heard and we will all be aware of your personal commitment to make our planet a better place for us all and for the animals and creatures that share this paradise with us.

Kiaora koutou!
Thank you for all your support - I'm very excited now.
Am just at the airport with Kathy and Samantha, waiting to board the flight.
This is my first time to the Cook Islands so it's great that I'm heading there in a real positive light.
I am feeling quite emotional, especially knowing so many other people are passionate about the cause but here we are guys, taking action!
Make sure you get all your friends and family to SIGN ON!
Love & light -

Its great to have you on board with the campaign I am sure the experience will be one you will treasure for a life time. You will inspire many people with your journey, as a young mother and excellent actress you have become a favourite of the nation. It is particularly impressive to me that you are giving your time to learn and shrare your experiences on what will be one of the front lines of the battle for the future of our planet. We and the scientists don't know how bad it will get or how quickly it will happen or exactly what or who will be impacted the most. We do know that most scientists agree that it is happening and if we do nothing it will cause catastrophic change and that the most vulnerable and worst affected will be the poor. Have a great and meaningful journey Daren GPNZ Board.
Kia Ora Keisha,
I hope you enjoy your adventure and learn some valuable things about climate change.
Sincerely,
Andrew Bell

Hi Keisha. Received your email a few days ago. Thought nah can't be from her so .. I junked it. Anyway, please accept my best wishes. As a role model I think you are in a position to do a lot of good - particularly for kids. Regards to Greenpeace.
Kia ora Keisha,
what a lovely personal thing to do sending an email to us all - thanks for that. My friend was right proper impressed I had an email from Keisha Castle-Hughes!
I have worked in environmental education for 10 years and I know how effective it is to have well known and respected people such as yourself send out powerful positive messages to their country. Thank you so much for having the courage to take a stand in this way. Have fun!
Kia kaha, aroha,
Keryn
