The Age of Stupid
The Age of Stupid
The Age of Stupid, from director Franny Armstrong (McLibel), and Kiwi Producer Lizzie Gillett, stars Pete Postlethwaite as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking back at news footage and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?
“Bold, supremely provocative and hugely important… a cry from the heart as much as a roar for necessary change” – THE TELEGRAPH (UK)
“Think ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ but with a personality” – LA TIMES
It’s a must see.
Following the extraordinary success of the UK People’s Premiere, The Age of Stupid will be launched simultaneously in Australia and New Zealand at the biggest – and greenest – live film event the two countries have ever seen.
On Weds 19th August, celebrities will arrive at both the Sydney Theatre and at a specially-constructed solar powered tent in downtown Auckland. The Auckland event is being hosted by Oxfam and Greenpeace. The celebrities, who’ll include Sign On ambassadors Lucy Lawless and Keisha Castle-Hughes, will brave the cameras on the green carpet before being welcomed by MC Oliver Driver.
Following the screening of the film, there’ll be a live link up with the Sydney event, before a Q and A with producer Lizzie Gillett, chaired by broadcaster Noelle McCarthy.
Meanwhile, across town, the film will open in all Hoyts cinemas. So there’s no excuse for missing it! See below for screening times.

I'll tell you what stupid is: forking over millions and millions of dollars to the United Nations; destroying the economy of not only ours, but many other nations on earth; and creating more unemployment, and for what?
The unproved theory that human beings MAY be responsible for warming up the planet?
This is 2055: nations of the world beholden to one global government body - the United Nations, made rich by the money given it by countries who are now poor, while we all enjoy the beautiful weather in our slums and curse the day we believed in the mad scientists who predicted climate change disasters that never came.
Comeon people!!!! Wake up and smell the long-chain monomers!!
Human-caused CO2 makes up less than one quarter of one percent of all so-called greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.
Joseph I think you've been buying into the crackpot climate skeptic arguments without really looking at the evidence.
Here is a list of just some of the credible organisations that accept anthropogenic global warming as real and scientifically well-supported:
NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS): http://www.giss.nasa.gov/edu/gwdebate/
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA): http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/globalwarming.html
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC):

National Academy of Sciences (NAS):

State of the Canadian Cryosphere (SOCC) -

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):

The Royal Society of the UK (RS)

... and the list goes on and on.
Nick, I can quote you just as many -
Here are but a few things I've collected over the last few weeks -
A Greenpeace leader admits to lying about Arctic melt
Now more and more scientists are coming out -
A group of senior physicists, including a Nobel Prize winner, have put their names to a letter rejecting claims that evidence of human caused global warming is “incontrovertible”, and suggesting the role of CO2 has been overhyped.
31,000 scientists last year did the same thing.
A scientist from MIT has just come out and published a paper “which proves that IPCC models are overstating by 6 times, the relevance of CO2 in Earth’s Atmosphere".
The global surface temperature record, which we update and publish
every month, has shown no statistically-significant “global warming”
for almost 15 years. Statistically-significant global cooling has now
persisted for very nearly eight years. Even a strong el Nino – expected
in the coming months – will be unlikely to reverse the cooling trend.
More significantly, the ARGO bathythermographs deployed
throughout the world’s oceans since 2003 show that the top 400
fathoms of the oceans, where it is agreed between all parties that at
least 80% of all heat caused by manmade “global warming” must
accumulate, have been cooling over the past six years. That now prolonged
ocean cooling is fatal to the “official” theory that “global
warming” will happen on anything other than a minute scale.
The Climate Research Unit in the UK, that has collected the climate change data since the 1980s first refused to share the raw data so that it may be peer reviewed by other experts, saying “Even if WMO agrees, I will still not pass on the data. We have 25 or so years invested in the work. Why should I make the data available to you, when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it.”, and now they claim they have erased it completely. How convenient.
A scientist in Australia has found that sea levels AREN’T rising –
SEA LEVEL IN THE SOUTHWEST PACIFIC IS STABLE
Posted 4 August 2009
“Graphs of sea level for twelve locations in the southwest Pacific show stable sea level for about ten years over the region. The data … suggest that any rise of global sea level is negligible….. Sea level studies have not been carried out for very long, but they can indicate major tectonic components such as isostatic rebound in Scandinavia. ..Modelling to show alarming rates of sea level rise (associated with alleged global warming) are not supported by primary regional or global data. Even those places frequently said to be in grave danger of drowning, such as the Maldives, Tuvalu and Holland, appear to be safe”. – New paper by Cliff Ollier, University of Western Australia.

Even Australia looks likely not to follow through with their Carbon reduction programme –
The very last thing the Australian economy needs is the cap and trade legislation being proposed by Kevin Rudd. If it gets passed, the country will go broke.’
Not for one second does Plimer believe it will get passed. As with its US equivalent the Waxman-Markey cap and trade bill, Kevin Rudd’s Emission Trading Scheme legislation narrowly squeaked its way through the House of Representatives. But again as in America, the real challenge lies with the upper house, the Senate. Thanks in good measure to the influence of Plimer and his book — ‘I have politicians ringing me all the time’ — the Senate looks likely to reject the bill. If it does so twice, then the Australian government will collapse, a ‘double dissolution’ will be forced and a general election called. ‘Australia is at a very interesting point in the climate change debate,’ says Plimer.
Noticing a trend? People aren't falling for this stuff anymore, especially scientists.
I'm afraid that human-caused Climate change, like this film, is pure science fiction.
Joseph,
you sound like someone who also believes the world is run by a conspiracy of 'international jewry', and that 9/11 was orchestrated by Bush himself?!!
Using one liners on odd statistics about CO2 is nonsense. Lead makes up merely PPMs of your bloodstream, but if I upped those a few PPMs you'd be poisoned. Are you a chemist? atmospheric climatologist? physicist? Geologist?
'enjoy the beautiful weather in our slums'?...maybe you are just winding people up for the sake of it. This right wing govt has reversed a ban on incandescent light bulbs and the moratorium on oil/coal powerstations. Prey tell, how would kiwis using compact fluorescents and building wind farms bankrupt us?? The right and the National Govt are purely against acting on environmental matters at this scale because it puts their free market dogma into ruins...they cannot yet afford to admit their 1980s eutopian idea of consume, consume, consume has ecological and social limits.
Look who's in power- Lockwood, Williamson, Douglas, English...they're the ones who underfunded DOC to allow Cave Creek. They ripped the heart out of welfare and ran tv campaigns to make out that dole bludgers were stealing your taxes (they early 1990s tv ads claiming $20m theft turned out to be mostly admin errors by govt!)...anyway, I digress! The point being that these cronies together with the Business Round Table are utterly tied to the belief that wealth for a few is good, that high unemployment is good as it keeps labour costs low, that environmental externalities either do not exist or are not their problem, and are still wedded to the idea that 'environmental concern=bad business sense'. Shame the rest of the world like China etc are marching ahead on development, R&D, and roll out of solar/wind/wave etc and are going to leave NZ behind in the dust. So yeah, deny away, we can just make cheese and butter from the mountain tops eh?!! YOUR opinions and beliefs are what will make NZ a slum!
And as oft claimed- if the world's 1000s of scientists involved with IPCC science telling us this is happening are just doing it for the research money?...well this is one of the most f*cked up ways of getting cash!!!- you really think people spent 8+ yrs at uni to then try to con the world out of research cash??? come on!!! they would've been better doing a 3 yr commerce degree and then royally shafting the world as bankers like we saw recently....
so PLEEEEASE...read the UK Stern Review (acting on CO2 will NOT bankrupt any country, and there are loads of side benefits- energy security, green jobs, tech jobs, improvements in air quality etc....), and read some proper climate data.
Oh, and even if you still think it's all nonsense- well done you. Don't forget however, the rest of the civilised world has already bought into this. Your economy depends on us. For tourism, agriculture, fisheries and forestry. You dont honestly believe your wealth is being created by domestic consumption of cheese and wood pulp in Taumaranui, Ekatahuna and Porirua do ya?!!! wake up and smell the coffee!!!!
go jared!
Here's a thought for the skeptics:
If the Anthropogenic believers are right, then clearly we need to act swiftly and decisively. To delay is suicide (litteraly).
If the Anthropogenic believers are wrong (and the Skeptics/Deniers right), then what have we got to lose by reducing our emmisions anyway?
Peak Oil is pretty much upon us now. For that reason alone, we need to start the transition to using renewable, sustainable forms of energy.
Coal is no good, and neither is nuclear, each for their own reasons (Waste, pollution, etc.). Biofuel is a false promise. Hydrogen cells are only a storage system. Blah blah blah.
Renewable energy is the only way to go.
Bravo Jared and Carl.
For everyone who wants to engage in discussion with the skeptics (and not everyone can be bothered because it can be like banging your head against the wall) this is an excellent resource:
http://www.grist.org/article/series/skeptics/
And this is one of the best videos that sorts out the "debate" once and for all. Focuses on risk-management approach - the risk of taking action or the risk of not taking action..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF_anaVcCXg
Check it out - very well presented!
Hi thanks Stephanie it's great, a lot of us do risk analysis for various reasons. It's not rocket science. Good to see it used for this. There is only one way to go - we need 40% by 2020 - John, you are the Key!
What have we got to lose? It's not lower emissions I'm worried about. This carbon credit tax scheme is going to create an even worse recession, job losses and the like, worldwide. If it was proven, I'd say go ahead, but it's not.
Hear hear, Carl. Even if climate change is a load of crap, cutting back emissions is going to have other benefits. For example, if the public transport system was better integrated, we'd have less pollution, less stink, less traffic jams etc, aside from it being REALLY useful. If anyone here's visited Switzerland they'd know what I mean. NZ's air stinks sometimes, and I'm not just referring to Rotorua on a bad sulphur day :-).
No idea how the Swiss get the electricity for the trains, though - does anyone else know?
(And after seeing Kevin Milne on "Intrepid Journeys" when he visited Chernobyl, there's no WAY I'm ever supporting nuclear power! The thing's still leaking, and they don't have the resources to stop it!)
Look, if we really are in trouble, where is the consensus between scientists? Where the transparency between scientists to peer review data?
Your phrase "the rest of the civilised world has bought into this" is frankly, untrue. You would like people to think so, but it isn't true. Actually the world is cooling, and even Nasa reluctantly agrees -
For five years, a network of 3175 automated bathythermographs have been deployed in the oceans by the Argo program, a collaboration between 50 agencies from 26 countries. Warming believer Josh Willis of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory reluctantly concluded: "There has been a very slight cooling . . ."
It is true the world did warm between 1975 and 1998, but even Professor David Karoly, one of our leading alarmists, admitted this week "temperatures have dropped", "in surface temperatures and atmospheric temperatures measured from satellites".
IN fact, the fall in temperatures from just 2002 has already wiped out half the warming our planet experienced last century. (Check the data from Britain's Hadley Centre, NASA's Aqua satellite and the U.S. National Climatic Data Centre).
The Arctic ice cap shrank badly two summers ago after years of steady decline, but has since largely recovered. Satellite data from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Centre this week shows the Arctic hasn't had this much April ice for at least seven years.
I'm sorry, but if you REALLY examine the LATEST data, you'll see there is no cause for alarm.
I think Greenpeace does a good job with saving the whales etc, but they need to stop listening to people who have agendas and (yes) money to make off this.
thanks for signing on joseph, but i think you could spare us with all of this on here, please.
you're wasting your time.
What a pity we in the Hamilton region and surrounding towns haven't been able to attend a premiere showing of 'The Age of Stupid'. When will it be available in central Waikato?
Yes the nearest place was Tauranga, 3 hours away. Oh well, we will have to wait til December before Coromandel people can see it, unless we can get hold of a DVD?
well i just watched age of stupid and two quotes really struck me.
" we are not the first species to make ourselves extict, but we are the first to do it knowingly"
this goes to show how even though we are supposed to be the most intelligent species on the planet, we are still too arrogant to acceot our mistakes and to face up to the challenge that is global warming! come on ! we ve faced ww1 and ww2 , halocaust, hitler, racism. we ve managed to fix those issues ( to a certain degree ) and all those issues were changed through the power of the public!!!! we need to educate everyone and take action now!
" we know how to profit , we dont know how to protect "
we only care about one thing in this world. money . and we re stupid enough to consume and gobble up anything the media tells us will make us happy. fuk u media. humans are better than that!
